At h-Bar Instruments, we design and build next-generation cryogenic instrumentation for electron microscopy, enabling atomic-resolution measurements of quantum and functional materials at ultra-low temperatures. Our systems operate at the limits of mechanical, thermal, and electrical performance and are used by leading research institutions worldwide.
We are engineers and scientists deeply involved in every stage of development — from first principles and conceptual design to prototyping, testing, deployment, and scientific use. We are a small, hands-on team that values curiosity, creativity, and the ability to turn ideas into real, working hardware.
What you'll work on
- Build next-generation instrumentation for ultracold, atomic-resolution imaging at the forefront of science and engineering.
- Design and engineer systems that operate under extreme conditions, including ultralow temperatures, ultra-low vibration, and sub-angstrom stability requirements.
- Own the complete engineering lifecycle, from concept development and design through prototyping, testing, deployment, and operation in research environments.
- Maintain documentation, bills of materials, and inventory.
- Gain access to unique, custom-built instrumentation, advanced fabrication tools, and world-class experimental facilities.
- Work closely with leading research groups and institutions around the world to transform new ideas into cutting-edge instruments that contribute directly to breakthrough research in quantum materials, nanotechnology, electron microscopy, and other emerging scientific fields.
Ideal background / wish list
We do not expect candidates to match every item below. Experience in scientific research, engineering, or instrumentation is a plus, but we value ability and curiosity over a perfect background match.
Technical Skills
- Mechanical CAD and PCB design
- Hands-on prototyping, machining, assembly, and debugging
- Comfort working across mechanical, electrical, and high vacuum systems
Relevant Experience (any combination)
- Cryogenics or low-temperature instrumentation
- Vibration engineering and precision mechanics
- Electron microscopy (TEM/STEM) or related instrumentation
- RF or low-noise electronics
- Vacuum systems and UHV-compatible design
- CNC/CAM, machining, or close interaction with machine shops
- Experimental research in physics, materials science, or related fields
Working Style
- Strong organizational and project-management skills
- Experience working toward concrete deliverables with collaborators (real instruments, not just simulations or designs)
- Independent, self-directed, and curious
- Enjoys learning new tools and techniques as needed
- Passion for discovery and hands-on engineering, solving hard problems with no off-the-shelf solutions
